A design firm has developed a way to use facial recognition technology to make pancake selfies, according to a Vice Munchies article by Hilary Pollack. It’s really pretty much what it sounds like. The system imprints a user’s likeness onto the face of a pancake.
We come to this evolutionary cul-de-sac by way of Bristol-based design firm Kinneir Dufort. Using facial-recognition software, the system captures an image of a user’s face, and “prints” it onto a pancake by elaborately layering pancake batter as the the pancake is fried, creating a juxtaposition of lighter and darker areas on the face of the pancake in a design that resembles the user’s image. All this came about just in time for Pancake Day.
It isn’t the first playful work of art to draw attention to biometric technology; earlier this year a Dutch designer created a book cover that would only open for a user conveying a neutral facial expression. It’s all good fun, with the added benefit of getting people to think more actively about this technology as it continues to creep into our everyday lives, often in ways that are not so playful.
