L-1 Identity Solutions Advances State-of-the-Art Iris Technology with Release of New Daugman ’08 Algorithm - May 05, 2008
Next Generation Technology Launch Responds to Today’s Real World Applications of Iris Recognition with Advances to Legacy 2Pi Algorithm
STAMFORD, Conn.-L-1 Identity Solutions, Inc. (NYSE:ID) announced today the release of Daugman ’08, a new version of the legacy 2Pi iris recognition algorithm owned by L-1 Identity Solutions. Daugman ‘08 is designed to address the real-world applications for iris recognition where control over the process of acquiring an image of the human iris is often constrained. These applications include iris on the move, iris at a distance and iris recognition from mobile devices.
Iris image capture in today’s real-world environments is a challenge, often producing off-axis iris images with significant distortions, as well as images with motion blur, non circular iris and other imaging artifacts. As a result, these imaging challenges can result in higher false rejection rates.
Daugman ’08 is a direct response to these challenging conditions and will ensure that the new algorithm performs optimally in any environmental condition. Its new functionality is the result of a major research and development initiative led by L-1’s Chief Scientist for Iris Recognition and the original inventor of the 2Pi algorithm, Professor John Daugman. The functionality has been extensively field tested in cutting edge implementations over the last several months and all future L-1 iris solutions will incorporate this new functionality. Additionally, Daugman ‘08 will support templates from previous iris algorithms, such as 2Pi.
“We are very pleased with the progress we have been able to make in advancing the iris algorithm since its invention almost ten years ago,” said Prof. John Daugman, L-1 Chief Scientist for Iris Recognition. “The world of opportunities for iris has changed dramatically since its inception and many new applications and challenges are pushing the technology to new limits. These challenges are being met in the latest iteration of our algorithm, which I am confident will bring unparalleled power and flexibility to iris applications.”
Specific enhancements in Daugman ’08 include:
Ability to register a wider range of iris shapes beyond perfect donut shapes: An enhanced iris boundary mapping system now accommodates diversified iris shapes typical of most human eyes, beyond standard circular outlines. The solution uses a dynamic and flexible active contouring system that eliminates previous requirements to force all iris shapes to have circular boundaries, a coercion that sometimes caused False Rejects during the matching process.
Increased speed: The new algorithm is more than 50 times faster than previous versions, enabling faster enrollment and quicker matching.
Improved detection, masking and correction of obstructions on and around the iris image: Daugman ‘08 offers more efficient and effective detection and exclusions of corruptions around the iris image (such as eyelashes or eyelids) based on advanced principles of statistical inference.
Ability to detect and compensate for a non-frontal gaze which is often found in moving subjects.
“L-1 is strongly committed to maintaining state-of-the-art biometrics technology across all modalities and to enable the next generation applications for biometrics,” said Robert V. LaPenta, Chairman, President and CEO of L-1 Identity Solutions. “Daugman ’08 demonstrates our ability to continue to address market demand and we believe with this new functionality, the market for iris should accelerate dramatically.”
