LG is rumored to be planning to include iris scanning in its next flagship smartphone, reports The Korea Herald. The device, dubbed the G6, is also expected to support LG’s own mobile payment platform, thought to be called LG Pay.
The Korean company’s mobile unit reportedly saw significant losses due to the poor market performance of its G5 smartphone this year, and is seeking to make a strong comeback by including sophisticated technologies in its next major device. With Samsung having sought to pioneer mobile iris scanning and stumbled with its aborted Galaxy Note7 effort, and with Apple still working on its own such technology, LG now has an opportunity to take the lead on this front.
Launching its own mPayment system could be more of a gamble, given the brand recognition that rivals like Apple Pay and Samsung Pay have already established. But LG is thought to be exploring Magnetic Secure Transmission technology for LG Pay, the same technology used by Samsung to emulate traditional magnetic stripe payment cards for compatibility with older card readers; and that could give LG Pay a bit of an edge, especially if it launches on a smartphone as popular as LG hopes the G6 will be.
