A major community housing organization in India is going to take advantage of biometric identification in its housing assignments and administration. The Chandigarh Housing Board has announced that it will link residents’ information to their Aadhaar numbers.
Aadhaar is, of course, India’s enormous biometric national ID program, with over a billion citizens now enrolled. It’s being used for an increasing number of civil activities, ranging from subsidy distribution to everyday banking services. Now, the CHB is poised to further expand its reach.
Announcing the move through media, the housing board explained that it would help to improve transparency—another key aim of Aadhaar—and CHB Chairman Maninder Singh attested that it will also “be a boon to the allottees as it will facilitate easier identification” and should reduce paperwork. The CHB has asked the Unique Identification Authority of India, which administrates Aadhaar, to supply ID numbers pertaining to its residents, and is also requesting that residents themselves submit their Aadhaar numbers through email or mail.
