Today, Acuity Market Intelligence has released forecasts from a new report, “The Global National eID Industry Report: 2014 Edition.” The numbers cover the period between 2013 and 2018, indicating that during that time National Electronic ID (eID) programs will generate $54 billion in revenue.
“In five years time, half of the world’s population will have a chip-based National eID card, including near-complete regional coverage in Europe,” says Acuity Principal, Maxine Most. “This eID platform will encourage significant expansion of eGovernment services and provide the foundation for the development of national and global trusted authentication infrastructures.”
According to the report, during the covered period the number of National eID Cards in circulation will double, starting at 1.75 billion and reaching 3.5 billion by 2018 (with 300 million additional National ID cards that have integrated biometrics in non-chip-based card programs also being issued by 31 countries). Owing primarily to the continent’s massive population, Asia is the region set to dominate the market, representing almost 70 percent of all National eID card units.
Putting this global market dominance in perspective, Europe comes in second place in terms of market representation with 11 percent of all the world’s National eID cards.
“The evolution of National eIDs is also an evolution towards mobility as these physical electronic credentials evolve towards virtual credentials that are easily stored in mobile devices,” says Most. “This separation of credential from form factor will fundamentally shift the way identity is established, referenced, and used everyday across the globe.”
The report forecasts that the number of countries issuing National eID cards will increase 70 percent (from 56 to 95) between 2013 and 2018 despite the total number of countries with some form of National ID program is projected to increase just 6.5 percent (from 142 to 152).
Acuity says that the rapid evolution of eID dominance reflects a worldwide drive towards eGovernment and eCommerce services. Over the next five years this will manifest in the emergence of national, regional and global transaction infrastructures, each secured by a trusted eID platform.
Previously reported on findBIOMETRICS, Acuity Market Intelligence released a report detailing the growth of automated border control eGates and kiosks. The report was the subject of two webinars and details a market on track to exceed $1.2 billion by 2020, with Europe dominating in revenue share.
