“In a statement announcing the demo, FPC called it a ‘perfect solution for contactless payment cards that are quickly becoming popular with consumers around the world, in addition to ID and access cards’.”

Fingerprint Cards has developed a demo smart card to show off its FPC1300 series of fingerprint sensors launched toward the end of last year.

FPC Demos Biometric NFC Smart CardThe demo shows how a smart card can use one of these FPC sensors – FPC1320 and FPC1321 – without the need for an embedded battery, since the sensor harnesses the power of a reader’s NFC field in order to operate. In a statement announcing the demo, FPC called it a “perfect solution for contactless payment cards that are quickly becoming popular with consumers around the world, in addition to ID and access cards”.

FPC says the sensors have already been integrated into products from Zwipe and Kona-I. Now, its demo may encourage further adoption from smart card makers. It’s an important effort for FPC, which anticipates a growing presence in the smart card market over the next several years, as outlined in its recent Annual Report.
