BioID has added eye biometrics to its BioID Web Service via a new beta test.
The service already supported fingerprint and facial recognition, allowing web developers to leverage mobile biometric authentication via the BioID Connect mobile app. Soon, they’ll also be able to use periocular biometrics – eye lashes, brows, wrinkles in the skin around the eyes, and parts of the iris, too – as another authentication modality.
In a statement announcing the new functionality, BioID CEO Ho Chang said that in some circumstances periocular biometrics “can provide greater performance instead of or in addition to face recognition with the same intuitive user experience.”
The news comes immediately after BioID’s announcement that it has brought its app to Android mobile devices, and is offering the source code for both Android and iOS to developers. Its eye recognition beta is now live through the company’s Playground testing environment, and the company says it will soon launch a production release for developers.
