The University of Kent and UKBI -
Addressing the Skills Gap in Biometrics -
European Biometrics Training and Education Seminar
In association with the European Biometrics Forum Thursday 26 June 2008, 10.30 – 15.30 at INTERNATIONAL HOUSE, Kent Brussels Office, 45 Rue du Commerce, 1000 Brussels
Until recently the deployment of Biometrics has been driven by government led programmes concerned with national security. However, it now encompasses an ever increasing number of private applications with demand being driven by consumer and corporate requirements for more secure and convenient methods of payment, access and healthcare. However, the implementation of future developments in Biometrics will depend on industry having the right skill sets. Are we properly equipped to respond to the surge in demand for engineers and technologists to research, design, develop and manufacture the Biometrics technology that will be required by European citizens?
Addressing the Skills Gap in Biometrics will bring together academics, industry and operators of Biometrics technology to identify needs for meeting lifelong learning requirements, including re-skilling and up-skilling, in Biometrics within Europe and to discuss the way forward. The event will feature expert academics, industry leaders and representatives of the European institutions who will speak on the need for training and education in Biometrics and the provision currently available. The panel of experts will facilitate discussion to identify the skills gaps and provide the opportunity and stimulus for subsequent collaboration to pursue funding and mechanisms for the ideas/
programme identified.
The event will provide delegates with:
• Expert speakers from industry and academia to provide insight in-to requirements for Biometrics education and training for the future and provision currently available.
• An opportunity for a focused debate to consider what skills gaps exist within
Biometrics in Europe, and to develop a strategy for the future.
• Speakers from the European Commission who will identify current and future funding opportunities and mechanisms for training and education programmes.
• A platform to establish future Research-Industry partnerships and collaboration
to pursue funding for the training and education programmes identified.
